President Obama’s “Made in America” List Includes Toni Morrison, “Godfather”

MadeinAmericaList-CindyFazziIn honor of the World Intellectual Property Day, the White House has released President Obama’s “Made in America” list of favorite American creators. The list includes Toni Morrison’s “Song of Solomon” and the “Godfather” movies.

“Our country itself was once a creative idea conceived by independent-minded people. Today the work of our creative and innovative industries supports more than 27 million jobs here at home and account for more than 60 percent of the goods we export to other countries. That’s worth protecting from counterfeiters and thieves—and we are,” wrote President Obama.

Every year, the World Intellectual Property Organization dedicates April 26 to celebrate and educate people about intellectual property rights—copyrights, patents, trademarks, and industrial designs. This year’s theme is culture in the digital age.

Celebrate and Honor American Creators

I heeded the Authors Guild’s call to celebrate and honor American creators by making my own “Made in America” list and sharing it on social media. What about you—what/who is on your “Made in America” list?

Here are my favorite American creators:

The Book: “Cold Mountain” by Charles Frazier

The Song: “My Immortal” by Evanescence

The Invention: Airplane—Wright Brothers

The App: FitBit

The Sports Team: Ohio State Buckeyes

The TV Series: “Twin Peaks”

The Movie: “On the Waterfront” directed by Elia Kazan

The Designer: Calvin Klein

Access the blank list here. Print it, fill it out, take a photo, and then share your list on social media.  More power to American writers, filmmakers, composers, musicians, designers, inventors, and other creators!
