Author Cate Masters Wants to Empower Women to “Follow Their Bliss”

Goddess-Awakened-MEDCate Masters not just writes, but concocts stories. Her books combine magic, mayhem, and romance. She writes fantasy, historical, contemporary, and speculative fiction.

Masters, who also writes as C.A. Masterson, has 31 releases under her belt. Her latest novel, “Goddess, Awakened,” is a reflection of her underlying goal to write stories that empower women to follow their bliss.

Masters has been recognized for her writing, including winning two awards for her literary short stories: “Christmas Eve at the Diner on Rathole Street” won first place in the 2010 Pearl S. Buck Foundation contest and “All is Calm, All is Bright” won second place in the Pennwriters Short Story Contest in 2005.

She talked more about her publishing experience in this Q&A:

Q: What is “Goddess, Awakened” about?

A: On the surface, “Goddess, Awakened” is about a 40-something woman reconnecting with her family, her heritage, and in doing so, her true self. Beneath that, the theme of “The Goddess Connection” series is that every woman has unique strengths and talents, the very elements of her being, and by nourishing and celebrating those aspects of herself, she will find the greatest satisfaction.

Q: Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

A: In a way, I identify with the heroine of “Goddess, Awakened” —she’s a late bloomer, too. I’ve been writing forever, but didn’t really begin subbing (submitting) until five years ago, and have been having a wild, wonderful time ever since. My hubby and I will celebrate our 37th wedding anniversary this fall, and I’m living my own HEA in beautiful central Pennsylvania.

Q: How many books have you written and published?

A: I’ve lost count how many! “Goddess, Awakened” is about my 31st release. Since 2009, I’ve had releases with about 10 publishers under my Cate Masters pen name—12 contemporaries, 14 fantasy/paranormals, five historicals, plus Kensington will release another contemporary, “Twice in A Blue Moon,” in January 2015, and my fantasy, “The Griffin’s Secret,” in June 2015. I also write mainstream and speculative stories under C.A. Masterson.

Q: What inspired you to write “Goddess, Awakened”?

A: I love paranormals based in mythology, but mostly I love stories that empower and encourage women to follow their bliss.

Q: Do you have an agent?

A: No, I’ve always subbed to publishers myself.

Q: What’s the biggest lesson you learned during the publication of this book?

A: The importance of a good editor. I’ve always appreciated the insights of my editors, especially those who share my vision for a story.

Q: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

A: Don’t give up. The old saying about success being 10 percent talent and 90 percent persistence isn’t far off the mark. The more you write, the better you will become.
